Helping kids to a healthy start for school

With so many things to think about when their kids start school for the first time it can be easy for parents to overlook health checks and immunisations, a simple error which could cost some Brisbane and Moreton Bay families dearly. Metro North Brisbane Medicare Local director Dr Trish Baker said parents needed to be aware of recent changes to the rules affecting payment of the Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement, which required children to have health checks and be fully immunised.

Appointment of skilled leaders

The Metro North Brisbane Medicare Local board has selected two skilled leaders to serve as Chair and Deputy Chair of the Board. Demonstrating a commitment to strong governance and clinical leadership, the Medicare Local’s board of directors appointed CPA, Mr Mike Gilmour, and St Lucia general practitioner, Dr Anita Green, to the Chair and Deputy Chair roles respectively.

Top career move for medical reception staff

Reception staff working in general practice throughout Queensland now have the opportunity to enhance their career prospects with a nationally accredited qualification in medical assisting. The Certificate IV in Medical Practice Assisting (HLT 43307) was incorporated into the National Health Training Package in 2007. Course training coordinator Maralan Southern said training to become a Medical Assistant is ideally suited to administration professionals who are already working in a medical practice and looking to expand their skills.

Delivering psychology services into residential aged care

Psychologists at a national conference in Melbourne will today hear how Brisbane aged care residents are benefiting from an innovative program delivering subsidised mental health services in residential aged care facilities. Metro North Brisbane Medicare Local director Dr Trish Baker said the Aged Care Access Initiative funded program has been improving the health and wellbeing of residents across Brisbane for the past two years.
