Helping refugees to good health

Over the past five years over 6,000 people granted humanitarian visas have settled across the Brisbane north and Moreton Bay area, particularly from Burma, Iraq and Sudan. Many come from long stays in refugee communities where they have had little or no access to mainstream medical care. Health professionals involved in the care of recently arrived refugees and those with in an interest in this diverse and interesting area are invited to attend a workshop that will explore health issues and local support services available to health care providers. Learn about the roles of key agencies including Refugee Health Queensland, the Transcultural Mental Health Centre and the Multicultural Development Association and, explore practical issues facing health care providers including accessing medical records, health assessments and immunisation catch ups. Hear first hand from a local person of refugee background and others who support refugees in the community. Two workshops to choose from to suit your schedule – an evening session or a Saturday workshop. At the Saturday workshop you will benefit from more time with our presenters to discuss these issues and gain tips and advice on working effectively with refugee clients and support services.
